What kind of design work do you do at Khan Academy?

My work as a Designer at Khan Academy has ranged from multi-month, research-heavy vision setting to quick-turnaround hackathon projects that help teachers navigate Khan Academy’s content interactively to embedding with other teams so that we can develop a more classroom-centered approach in their surface area to more typical feature development cycles, and everything in between.

CONTEXT

I joined Khan Academy in October of 2018 (before the pandemic). Since then, I have been based on the Classroom team (designing for teachers), but have worked with our SAT Prep team and our Districts team as well.

Student understanding, at-a-glance

In early 2020, I shipped a report that allows teachers to visually compare “mastery levels,” or the depth of understanding a single student has demonstrated, across all of the content in a single Khan Academy course, such as High school geometry.

What could teaching with Khan look like 3 years from now?

In late 2020 (to early 2021), I co-lead Design on a massive 3-year vision undertaking for the product organization. What started as an exercise in understanding teacher adoption lead to a deep research and visioning exercise that crossed all of our core platform teams.

Assignment management for the weary teacher

In 2021, I shipped a series of long-desired improvements to the way teachers can manage assignments that they have created for their class on Khan Academy, including a way to schedule assignments in advance and a method for bulk editing multiple assignments at once.
